WHY PETS? WHY ME? WHO CONTROLS THE LEASH?

Saturday, March 2, 2013

Ever since I can remember I’ve had pets.
No big deal. I’m just one of those people.
Working as a teacher in a class of special education students, trust was a big deal. Many times these children came into school from an abusive past. These children had egos as fragile as a soap bubble. How was it possible in as short a span as an hour to teach the subject matter (biology) and the hidden curriculum taking place within a class: respect, trust, humanity?

I found that classroom pets were the perfect choice. From leopard salamanders to rainbow boas, saltwater tanks to love birds, and then on special occasions, my dogs and cats. There is no possible way to adequately describe the expression on a child’s face that once feared his/her surroundings to find comfort in the companionship of an animal. I’ve seen aggressive, mute children blossom into smiling chatterboxes, coming into school early and stopping by the class to check on a pet.

Pets won’t solve many of the looming issues in a person’s life. Yet each animal that comes into contact with a person who is lonely, hurting, or in need of a connection...this link builds each time they are together.

Nowadays, I no longer teach but I’ve still got an entourage of animals. When we go out for a walk it’s not just the dogs but the cats come too. Who controls the leash? Our hearts. For that is the body part connected to these animals.

PLEASE GIVE A LITTLE FROM YOUR HEART TO ENSURE THOSE IN NEED HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO ALLEVIATE LONELINESS, OVERCOME ISOLATION, AND FIND A COMPANION TO LEASH TO THEIR HEARTY.
